To Better Serve

The Folk School is now a program of Mikell Conference Center rather than the Work of Our Hands. We have, in fact, been operating on this basis for the last couple of years. WOOH will focus on supporting the art ministries of Emmaus House and Holy Comforter and will continue to provide scholarship aid so that people from these programs can attend the Folk School. We will focus on and extend our programs at Mikell.

In order to do this and to assure continuity, we have added two part time positions: a Program Coordinator, Tracy Schroeder, and a Facilities Coordinator and Registrar, Melanie Struble. They will be responsible for organizing our conferences: program planning, recruiting teachers, registration, communication
The cost will be divided into two parts: room and board, based on Camp Mikell’s current rates: $95 per person for a dorm, and $140 per person for a cottage, and a tuition fee of $100 per participant. Most other folk schools and conferences divide the costs up in this way, though our fees are still considerably less than others.
One of our core values is to make the Folk School experience available to anyone who wants to come through scholarship aid. The only way we have of funding this work is through fees, gifts for scholarships and grants.

Welcome

Located in the mountains of northwest Georgia near Toccoa, Mikell is the only folk school in Georgia.

Folk School XII--March 2-4, 2012

We expect around 120 participants and teachers at the upcoming Folk School in March. There will be some new offerings this year" Zentangle Art, Stencil Art, and Clay Sculpture/creche making. The weekend will also include Wood Turning, Painting, Felting, Quilting, Weaving, Basketry, Copper Enameling, Knitting, Stained Glass,and Creative Writing . Come and discover or rediscover your creative talents, enjoy the mountains in early spring, feast on great food, and to meet wonderful people. Put the date on your calendar, tell a friend, and plan to be a part of this wonderful experience. The deadline for registering is February 14. Many courses fill up quickly, so register early. Click on the Registration tab at the top of this page. The deadline for registering is February 20th.
